Privacy Policy

Jason Butterfield (https://jasonbu.online) is a protocol-native site: the writing and other content shown here are read live from the owner's AT Protocol data repository (PDS), not stored in a conventional database. This policy explains what happens when you visit or sign in.

Signing in

Signing in uses AT Protocol OAuth with your own identity (a Bluesky handle or another AT Protocol account). We never see or store your password. After sign-in, the site sets a signed cookie containing only your decentralized identifier (DID) — no access tokens are ever stored in your browser. The OAuth session itself is kept server-side, associated with your DID.

Comments, likes, and reposts

Article and book discussions are ordinary Bluesky posts. Comments, likes, and reposts you make through this site are published to the AT Protocol network under your own account and are visible anywhere Bluesky content is visible. We don't operate a separate, site-only comment store.

Analytics

This site uses a self-hosted analytics tool (Umami) to understand aggregate traffic, such as which pages are read. It does not use third-party advertising trackers, and it does not sell or share visitor data with ad networks.

What we store

A small amount of operational data — session records, OAuth state, and read-performance caches — is kept in server-side infrastructure (a private database and cache) to make the site work. This data is never the source of truth for your content; it can be regenerated from the AT Protocol network at any time and isn't sold or shared with third parties.

Third-party links

Links to Bluesky, other AT Protocol services, bookselling sites, and similar destinations are governed by those services' own privacy policies, not this one.
